I was fortunate enough to grow up in a family that went skiing every winter. Even though I grew up in Ohio we would go to the small local resort and tried to go on a ski trip out of state whenever we could. I always loved skiing, it’s great to have something to look forward to in the winter(after Christmas of course). I taught many of my childhood friends to ski and I always loved ski club at school.
When I met Chris I knew I had to teach him. He chose snowboarding first and we both now are snowboarders who occasionally ski. It has always been a great bonding experience for us.
When we had kids it was a priority to teach them to ski. Chris lovingly and diligently held Shanes hands everyday and was teaching him to starting at 4months old. Amazingly Shane was walking completely on his own at 7months and 3wks! Many people still found it crazy that we took Shane skiing his first winter at 11 months old. It was extremely hard and stressful on Chris and I but we will never regret that we started him so young!!
We have taken him every year since. Last year at the age of 3 it really clicked for him. He is even able to go down the bunny hill by himself!
Shine started last year at 12 months. Yes there was lots and lots of crying. After all, trying to keep gloves on a 1 year old is a sport in itself. But once we got her going down the hill between our legs she was having a blast!! Every time we would get to the bottom she would do the sign language sign for more, more!!
Even if you have a small hill in your yard that you can teach your kids on, them just becoming comfortable with being on skis will help them in the future. I will always be thankful to my parents that I didn’t have to endure the difficulty of learning to ski as an adult. Some of my most wonderful childhood memories are skiing with my family,
I look forward to many days of skiing and snowboarding with my kids as they get older. It may not be for everyone, but if you are interested in your kids being skiers I strongly recommend starting them as young as possible!
And a bonus is they sleep so well after spending the day skiing!!
